Body sculpting and enhancements are not a decision to be made lightly. Decisions such as these require research, evaluation of available finances, and insurance as well as needs, and long term benefits versus potential risks. Most importantly they require discussions with professionals such as those at Glam RN.
As an example let’s consider Coolsclupting® versus liposuction. Both procedures are used to reduce or permanently remove fat from targeted areas. CoolSculpting® is a noninvasive procedure with relatively minor side effects that may include short-term bruising or skin sensitivity which fade within a few short weeks.
Liposuction requires use of anesthesia as it is classified an invasive surgery. Side effects can range from mild to severe and may may include blood clots, a life threatening issue, and severe reactions to anesthesia. Warnings about avoidance of liposuction for patients with a history of heart problems or blood clotting disorders, or by pregnant woman are indicative of the potential risks.
Another difference between the two procedures is in regard to convenience. CoolSculpting® is an outpatient procedure with a typical session taking an hour. In general several biweekly sessions are required. Liposuction can also be done as an outpatient surgery but as noted, since it is an invasive procedure hospitalization is a possibility. It also requires a minimum of one hour for the procedure but several hours is not uncommon, and recovery will take several days. Typically with liposuction there is need for but one procedure but full results may not be noticeable for months compared to Coolsculpting ® with results being noticeable in weeks.
There are other differences to consider as well. Several studies have indicated that CoolSculpting® can eliminate up to 25 percent of the fat cells within the area targeted. With liposuction you may be able to remove up to 11 pounds of fat, the maximum amount deemed safe. However, with both there is a probability of developing fat in other areas of your body without exercise or muscle toning. One expansive study concluded by noting that within one year of a liposuction procedure, participants had the same amount of body fat they had prior to the procedure but it had been redistributed to different areas.
Liposuction was developed in the 1980’s while Coolsculpting® is a relatively new procedure. Currently there are several types of liposuction procedures including Suction Assisted Lipectomy (SAL), the original technique, Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL), Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL), Laser Assisted Liposuction (LAL), and Fluid Assisted Liposuction (FAL). With Coolsculpting ® a cooling head is placed over a gelled pad and then suction is activated. The machines base cools the liquid flowing through the headpiece and pulls the fatty area into the head, which freezing the fat. At the end of the procedure the frozen area is massaged briefly. Some patients note a minimal initial discomfort but the selected area becomes numb once the cooling starts and the massage doesn’t hurt.
